What is WiFi 6?

What is WiFi 6?

WiFi 6 is a wireless networking standard that provides high-throughput WiFi on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It is the successor to WiFi 5 and is intended to provide faster speeds, greater capacity, and improved efficiency. One of the key features of WiFi 6 allows multiple devices to communicate simultaneously over the same frequency band, increasing the capacity and efficiency of your network. WiFi 6’s other big win is it’s ability to a larger number of devices around your home.

WiFi 6 is backwards compatible with WiFi 5 and other previous versions of WiFi, so any device that is compatible with WiFi 5 should also be able to connect to your WiFi 6 network. However, to take advantage of the faster speeds and improved efficiency of WiFi 6, a device must be specifically designed to support the WiFi 6 standard. Many newer devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets, are being released with WiFi 6 support, but there are still many devices on the market that only support Wi-Fi 5 or earlier versions of Wi-Fi. As Wi-Fi 6 becomes more widespread, it is likely that more devices will be released with support for the standard.

So what does it mean for me?

It means we have future proofed your home. Your newer devices will likely be WiFi 6 and will benefit greatly from the speeds and reliability our network provides. For example all Iphone’s from the 11 onwards are WiFi 6 compatible as is the Playstation 5. The Xbox Series X doesn’t have WiFi 6 support.

What about my older devices?

Your older devices will certainly benefit from WiFi 6 as well as it is backwards compatible, just not as much as your newer devices.

Why do you not provide a WiFi 6E router?

Simply put there aren’t very many WiFi 6E devices to take advantage of this technology. Most new high-end Android phones, laptops, and TVs support do support WiFi 6E, but it is far from ubiquitous and are often outside the price range of the everyday person. For example there’s no WiFi 6E in the iPhone 14 series or the PlayStation 5.
