Is your broadband speed slowing you down? Here are seven easy steps you can take to enjoy ultrafast internet and improve your internet speed around your home.

1. Restart and check your router

Restarting your router can help reset its connection to the internet and resolve any technical issues. You should also ensure your router is set-up as instructed by your broadband provider for optimal functionality.

2. Check devices for updates

Make sure that your router firmware and other network devices are up to date, as updates can improve performance.

3. Use an ethernet wired connection

If you’d like to make the most out of your connection and receive the highest speed possible, consider using a wired connection. It will give you a direct, physical connection to the internet. This is particularly useful if you are performing high-bandwidth tasks such as zoom calls.

4. Check for signal interference

Other electronic devices in your home can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, causing slowdowns. Try moving your router to a central location or purchasing a Wi-Fi extender to eliminate interference. Certain routers may be more susceptible to interference than others so it’s always worth making sure your broadband provider provides a high-quality router for you to use.

5. Reevaluate your internet usage and needs

Your internet needs may have changed since you last chose a broadband package. Perhaps you use more streaming platforms, your children use tablets more often, or you want your games to run faster. Or maybe you now work from home more often instead of in an office and your weak wifi is holding you back. If you’re consistently using more bandwidth than your plan provides, you may want to consider upgrading to a higher speed plan.

6. Disable background apps and clear your cache

Running multiple apps in the background can slow down your internet speed. Close any unnecessary apps to free up bandwidth. Clearing your web browser cache can help improve your internet speed by freeing up bandwidth.

7. Switch broadband provider

If you’ve tried all of the above tips and your internet speed is still slow, contact your internet service provider. They can diagnose and resolve any issues on their end. If you are out of contract, switching broadband providers is a good way to improve your internet speed and often get a better price, particularly if your current provider does not offer a full-fibre connection. A full-fibre connection – like the one we offer here at Brillband – offers you a higher speed, greater reliability, higher consistency, increased security, and is more future-proof.
